We sat down with Leon who placed first in the Men’s Weight Loss category of our Sleekgeek 8-Week Challenge. We wanted to find out the secret to his success and he was happy to share it with us.
Please give us a short history of your journey to health and fitness before the challenge.
This is my 4th Sleekgeek challenge, the last one was just before Covid. During Covid all the lessons and habits I developed slowly went out of the window. I was still quite active, but my eating habits, discipline and consistency was nowhere to be found.
What prompted you to join the Sleekgeek Transformation Challenge?
During the 2022 December holidays, I realised that I was going back to where I was before my 1st challenge in 2019. Clothes were getting tight. I knew I needed to get back to where I was, I promised myself, I did not want to go back to where I used to be.
Give us a quick overview of the nutrition and eating plan that you followed during the challenge.
Strategy: Calories in vs Calories out. I followed a calorie restrictive diet but did not exclude anything outright. Just made sure that I kept an eye on how much and what I ate. Made healthy choices, e.g., sweet potatoes in oven vs potatoes in oil. And lots and lots of water.
Give us a quick overview of the training and exercise plan that you followed during the challenge.
Did not have access to a gym for this challenge. So, I mostly focused on cardio. Walks/run every day at a pace above comfort zone. Long incline hikes when I got the chance. And ROADBLOCKS 🙂
If you could give 3 pieces of advice to future challengers, what would they be?
Just start, don’t postpone, don’t look for excuses or external triggers to get going.
Keep going even if you feel like it’s hard, and if you fall get up and try again you have already started.
Don’t be too hard on yourself.
Why should people enter the challenge?
For me it is all about being surrounding yourself by like-minded people, all working together to reach the same goal. Even if you are not part of a team, the advice and friendliness of the Sleekgeek community is a winning recipe no matter what.
