We sat down with Jurie who placed second in the Men’s Transformation category of our Sleekgeek 8-Week Challenge. We wanted to find out the secret to his success and he was happy to share it with us.
Please give us a short history of your journey to health and fitness before the challenge.
My health was seriously bad, ate mostly junk food and was not in a good place health wise. Cannot remember when last, I actually did something active and when I played with my kids, I really felt like dying.
What prompted you to join the Sleekgeek Transformation Challenge?
I had to make a drastic change in my life and one of my friends told me about the Sleekgeek challenge. This whole journey motivated me so much that I am done with my old life and do not want to look and feel like that again.
Give us a quick overview of the nutrition and eating plan that you followed during the challenge.
Small Fibre breakfast, protein shake for lunch, 50g of biltong as a snack (did not always do the snack) and a protein combined with a salad or veg for dinner. Water keeps you hydrated. No sugar and no carbs!
Give us a quick overview of the training and exercise plan that you followed during the challenge.
As my fitness level was at a very poor state, I seriously only did walking for the entire time changing the intensity during the 30 min or so to get the blood going. But I took it slow on purpose, not to overdo it, as this was not an overnight fix. Getting more active as I go on.
If you could give 3 pieces of advice to future challengers, what would they be?
Keep it simple. Don’t kill yourself with workouts in the first week. Start slow and gradually increase the intensity that fits your fitness level. Keep meal portion small and do 1 sitting, try to stay away from 2nd’s.
Why should people enter the challenge?
Unless you’re a serious self-driven person, this challenge keeps you motivated throughout the 8 weeks and keeps you accountable for when you might slip into past habits. Go for it, you will not regret it. Besides the prizes as motivation, you will feel so much better about yourself if you reflect back on yourself after 8 weeks. Believe me, I felt ecstatic when I took at the after photo and compared it to my before photo. The feeling of accomplishment was tremendously good.
