We sat down with Therine Prinsloo who placed third in the ladies Transformation category of our Summer 2022 Sleekgeek 8-Week Challenge. We wanted to find out the secret to her success and she was happy to share it with us.
Please give us a short history of your journey to health and fitness before the challenge.
I’ve never really been a “gym-lets-get-fit” person untill I came across the Sleekgeek Challenge in 2015. Did one Challenge and got hooked to keeping fit and staying healthy, making better choices for myself.
What prompted you to join the Sleekgeek Transformation Challenge?
In February 2022 I got very sick, I couldn’t do any training, running or my usual CrossFit which I absolutely loved. I had a partial collapsed lung, and the doctor just couldn’t find the ‘why’. I got slightly better but then it started all over again and I was down with a very bad flu, for weeks on end. Improved a little but another two rounds followed. When I tried to walk for even 30m…I was out of breath with a heartrate that went through the roof.
Depression kicked in and I just ate and ate and ate the emotions away. I gained a lot of body fat in a short while and couldn’t care anymore. I realised that rock bottom…had a bottom. Life kept throwing all the curve balls.
I needed something to help me to get on track again, some accountability place, not just physically but mentally and emotionally. I came across Sleekgeek again and saw the incredible family that just grew so big since 2015 and I wanted to be part of it. I needed like-minded people, people to suffer with and help me stay on track to reach my goals.
Give us a quick overview of the nutrition and eating plan that you followed during the challenge.
I followed a very simple low carb, high protein eating plan that was sustainable. I took my protein shakes when training and really just tried to keep things as simple as possible. I kept track of everything and counted my calories making sure I stayed in a deficit.
Give us a quick overview of the training and exercise plan that you followed during the challenge.
I started off with a little weight training 4 x a week and every week I increased or added something. I only realised after week 2 that I could be part of a team and then I started doing the roadblocks and step challenges. As my health and fitness levels improved…. I kept on adding…. bootcamps, rebound classes, CrossFit, I walked a little further and on weekends I went for 6-9km runs. I fell in love with being fit and active again.
If you could give 3 pieces of advice to future challengers, what would they be?
- Just do it, you have nothing but bodyfat to lose, 8 weeks to a new you is really not that long.
- Find your ‘WHY’….it makes it a little easier.!.
- Will it be easy? Nope… WORTH IT… Absolutely!!!
Why should people enter the challenge?
The Challenge really helps you to set a goal, stay focused and by being part of a Team you have that place of accountability which pushes you to reach your goals week by week. It’s really nice to be part of a Team, knowing you are not in this alone, everyone suffers together, and the outcome makes you a better version of the person you were meant to be!
