The motivation and enthusiasm for everyone looking to live a healthy life.

YOUR TRANSFORMATION

Describe the “old you” before you made your transformation. How did you get there and what were you like?

Though I always enjoyed physical activity and wanted to be healthy, it was only in bursts for a few weeks/months, before going back into a more relaxed lifestyle and neglecting exercise.

What ignited your initial motivation to change?

My wife had an amazing body transformation, and I was motivated to do the same.

What are some of the things that the new you do differently now?

I have learned the power of consistency; I shape my life around my healthy lifestyle rather than the other way.

What are some of the things that the new you still struggle with?

I still enjoy beer and junk foods a little too much, a cheat day sometimes becomes a cheat long weekend.

If you could give yourself 1 piece of advice to help with that struggle, what would it be?

Remember that your lifestyle is now about healthy living, don’t bash yourself for going a little wild. Just make the choice to be better starting right now.

Did you plateau, get stuck, or get disillusioned, or even slide backwards a bit on your journey?

So many times!!!! I tore my Pec in early 2020, then covid started and gyms closed – I lost a lot of progress.

Before Injury During Covid During Covid

What is better since you got healthy?

I no longer need statins for cholesterol. I have stronger knees, which were a mess a couple of years ago.

TRAINING

What’s your favourite form of exercise? [Running, yoga, weightlifting, etc]

Weightlifting

How long have you been training and how did you get started?

I started taking weightlifting seriously in 2018, I did it before but on and off.

What does your typical workout look like?

About a 1hr to 1hr30 of weight training 20-25 times a month. I prefer to count times per month rather than a week, as I can have a bad week and still make up for it over the course of the month.

I have 2 variations of exercises for each muscle group day, that I alternate but I like to keep the exercises simple and effective.

Day 1- Chest Day 1- Flat & Fly
Day 2 – Back & Triceps 1 – Free-weight
Day 3 – Shoulders & Biceps 1 – Dumbbells
Day 4 – Legs & Abs 1 – Free-weight
Day 5 – Chest Day 2 – Decline & Incline
Day 6 – Back & Triceps 2 – Machines
Day 7 – Shoulder & Biceps 2 – Barbells
Day 8 – Legs & Abs 2 – Machines

Favorite exercise? [Distance / pose / movement / etc] –

Heavy Chest Day!!!!

Least favorite exercise? [Distance / pose / movement / etc] –

Light Weight, High Volume, Leg Day.

How does exercise make you feel?

An incredible high, like my brain, is floating on waves of electricity.

Do you prefer to train alone or with others? Why?

Alone, because I like to get lost in my thoughts while training. Although the motivation of training with someone is very addictive.

Most embarrassing training moment?

Once I was doing a decline press with dumbbells. I forgot to hook my feet into the leg locks and slid back, headfirst off the bench, and ended up in a heap on the floor in front of a full gym.

Top 3 things you must have at the gym or in your gym bag?

Wrist Guards, Elbow Guard and Knee-High Socks… I like to dress for the occasion.

Your next training goal?

Weigh over 80kg with 10% body fat.

Top 5 songs on your training playlist?

• The Business – Tiesto
• House Work – Jax Jones
• Bangarang – Skrillex
• Piece of your Heart – Meduza & GoodBoys
• Take me to Chruch – Hozier

How has exercise/training/Sport Changed your life? [Made it better, etc – please be specific]

I used to have to take statins for High Cholesterol. I now longer need them.
I used to struggle severely with my knees, at one point I thought I was going to need surgery. Over the years with slowly building the muscle around the knees I no longer suffer any pain.

NUTRITION

What’s your favourite meal? Burgers!

OK, now what’s your favourite healthy meal? So many, but currently love a homemade princess wrap.

Favourite protein?

Biltong when eating meat – Spicy bean patty when going plant based.

Favourite fat?

Peanut Butter

Favourite carbohydrate?

Rye Bread

What’s your nutrition philosophy / approach? [If you have one]

I am a big advocate of intermittent fasting. Especially after 35. I really found it hard to keep my weight down before I started fasting. I have recently found great success when keeping my diet as plant-based as I can.

How many meals a day do you eat?

I do intermittent fasting most days and eat between 6 pm-9 pm in the evening. That’s usually 2 helpings of a good-sized, home-cooked meal, >1500 Cal.

Do you have a cheat meal / treat strategy?

Yes, during a strict phase of my weight control I will choose 1 day a week and enjoy a few beers and something meaty and fun.

MINDSET

Most memorable personal best achievement to date. Something you maybe never imagined you could do?

Probably the fact that I can now train my legs close to par with the rest of my body. A few years ago, I could never have imagined that.

Favorite quote?

Don’t start again on Monday, Tomorrow, or even later today… start again right now!

Favourite book?

The Watchmen – Graphic Novel

What inspires and motivates you?

Seeing the human spirit drive a person to do something they never thought possible.

For what are you most grateful?

My family.

What do you want to say to other community members who might be nervous or hesitant to make a start?

This will be one of the most exciting and fulfilling journeys of your life, the great thing about the health community is that everyone will get behind you because we have all been where you are.

What are your top 5 tips for anyone starting on a healthy journey?

  1. Starting is the hardest part but give it your best until it becomes a habit.
  2. Stay Consistent – It’s not easy but it will make the biggest difference in reaching your goals.
  3. When you fall off the wagon, get straight back on. 1 missed step isn’t the end of the road.
  4. Don’t congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either, the journey is long and in the end it’s only for you.
  5. Enjoy your journey!!! You’ll find it much easier if you’re having a good time.
