Today we chat to Qhawekazi Langa who placed 1st in the Women’s Weight Loss Category of our New Year 2021 Sleekgeek 8-Week Transformation Challenge.
Give us a short history of your journey to health and fitness before the challenge.
I had lost weight before and gained it all back again because I wasn’t consistent. Sometimes I would eat clean and I would count calories and control my portions. I found myself back to square one, I realized on the Sleekgeek group that Elan counts his calories on food and controls his portions and I tried that, it worked out so well for me. The anti depressants that I’m on also contributed to the weight gain. I would get tired easily when walking, I would opt for the elevator or lift. The weight gain lowered my self esteem and confidence and I would get comments that bothered me like ‘you lost weight but now it’s all back’. I was unfit and unhealthy and that is why I decided to join the challenge because of the amazing support we as challengers get.
What prompted you to join the Sleekgeek Transformation Challenge?
What prompted me to join the challenge is because of the great support we get from the Sleekgeek community. I get to be comfortable because I’m on a journey with people who don’t judge me and are also going through the same / similar challenge I’m facing and we get to encourage one another.
Give us a quick overview of the nutrition and eating plan that you followed during the challenge.
I followed the nutrition plan from Sleekgeek Team Asijiki Xhosa group. I drank a cup of warm water with a slice of lemon every day in the morning on an empty stomach before breakfast and before I go to bed. I counted my calories and controlled my portions. I grilled and boiled my food and used clean spices from nature’s choice and pink Himalayan salt on food. I completely stayed away from carbs and sugar I cut out all types of cheese, dairy, and oil. I ate veggies / salad with a protein seasoned with clean spices and snacked on fruit and nuts.
Give us a quick overview of the training and exercise plan that you followed during the challenge.
I followed the exercise plan that challengers were provided with and added 20 min jump rope everyday. I started using the steps instead of the lift and I washed clothes and blankets by hand instead of using the washing machine.
If you could give 3 pieces of advice to future challengers, what would they be?
- Make a commitment to yourself. There will be times where you don’t feel like exercising but remind yourself why you started.
- Make exercise a fun thing to do. Put on music while exercising that way you get hyped up.
- Finish what you started. This applies to everything, if you have set a goal to do 15×4 sets then break those sets up but always finish them up. If you have set a goal to drink 3lt of water a day then finish the water but not at once. Same goes for the challenge as well, even though you might get discouraged along the way but it is very important to finish what you started.
Why should people enter the challenge?
People should enter the challenge because it value for money. The support from the community is amazing. There is a challengers group they open for each challenge. There are groups where you get added in if you like and you can even have a buddy for more support.
