Johann Prinsloo (42) & Elizna Prinsloo (38) were our 2019 New Year Couples 8-Week Challenge Winners and placed 2nd in both the Men’s and Women’s Transformation Categories.
History of your journey to health and fitness before the challenge
During our marriage of just over 12 years, we have been through various “thick and thin“ phases. Life has taught us that there will always be ups and downs. There will be times when you feel very good about yourself and times when you do not.
In general, we are an active couple – we enjoy running and the outdoors – however, we were faced with various challenges over the past year which resulted in us not always putting healthy eating and exercising as high on the priority list as it should have been.
What prompted you to join the Sleekgeek 8 Week Challenge?
Elizna: “This past December holiday was the first time that I can remember not having the confidence to wear my bikini in public. After gaining those unwanted kilograms (and feeling very uncomfortable) I knew it was time to take action!
Fortunately, it did not take too much to convince Johann to join me in implementing a plan of action. We came across SleekGeek a few years ago and was very glad that we were in time to sign-up for the Summer Challenge!
Johann: My wife!
Discount! Couples save R400 in out 8-Week Challenge
In our Sleekgeek 8-Week Challenge we offer couples a R400 discount to pay R998 (effectively R499 each instead of R699 each).
They can win a bonus R10,000 voucher to spend at adidas and still qualify for all individual prizes.
Can you give us a quick overview of the nutrition and eating plan that you followed during the challenge?
We have followed a number of eating plans in the past but never tried banting. We decided to try the low-carb & high-fat approach and was pleasantly surprised at the results.
During the challenge period, we celebrated Johann’s 42nd birthday, our 12th wedding anniversary as well as our daughter’s 5th birthday. It was quite an “event full” period, but due to our commitment and the fact that we’ve learned that consistency is key – we adhered to the eating plan principles.
A huge upside to this is that all the unhealthy food cravings disappear and you are actually able to appreciate the real food that God is giving us to enjoy.
Please give us a quick overview of the training and exercise plan that you followed during the challenge.
We joined FireFit, a local gym, and followed Nicolette’s training program which included HIIT, weight training and PowerPlate.
We did our best to exercise at least four times a week for half an hour (up to an hour during the last few weeks of the challenge) and also did Parkruns and/or other races (as a family) on Saturdays when possible.
It was really a great experience to exercise together and challenge each other.
If you could give 3 pieces of advice to future challengers, what would they be?
- Commit to a challenge and have an accountability partner:
“Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)
An accountability partner will challenge you to stick to the plan and at the end, you will achieve more. They will be there to support you and pick you up when you fall (literally and figuratively). - Do it for the right reasons – Do it for yourself:
We cannot control others’ opinions. You have to discover who you are and what makes you happy!
Be yourself and love yourself! You will be surprised at how many people you will inspire and motivate by implementing this mind shift. - Be consistent:
Consistency is a very powerful tool. Being consistent in your approach will result in tough routines running automatically. This will empower you, motivate you and you will reach your goals!
Being consistent, rather than trying to be perfect, is the key to achieving a healthy long-term lifestyle which will promote ongoing results.
