Welcome to Day 10 of our 21-Day Step Challenge!
You’ve been doing an incredible job, and today, we’re going to add a fun twist to your walking routine.
Today’s task is all about Distracted Walking.
Yes, you read that right! The complete opposite of what I challenged you to do yesterday with Day 9’s Mindful Walking task.
While mindfulness has its place and some phenomenal benefits, sometimes you just need to put your head down and get the steps in no matter what.
What is Distracted Walking?
Distracted walking is the practice of engaging in other activities while walking.
This can include listening to music or the radio, catching up on your favourite podcasts, enjoying an audiobook, making phone calls to loved ones, or simply chatting with a friend as you walk.
Why Try Distracted Walking?
- Enhanced Enjoyment: Makes your walking time more enjoyable and can even make it feel quicker if you’re entertained.
- Increased Duration: You might find yourself walking longer than planned when you’re distracted by something engaging.
- Versatility: Allows you to multitask, catching up on entertainment or social connections while still getting your steps in.
How to Practice Distracted Walking:
- Choose Your Distraction: Before you head out, decide what will accompany you. Music, a podcast, an audiobook, or a call? Maybe even plan a takeaway coffee+walk with a friend.
- Set Up: If you’re using your phone, make sure your headphones are ready and your choice of distraction is queued up. If walking with a friend, set a time and place to meet.
- Stay Safe: While enjoying your distraction, remain mindful of your surroundings, especially when crossing streets or navigating busy/unsafe areas.
- Notice the Difference: As you walk, think about how different this feels compared to the mindful walks. Do you feel more relaxed, energized, or perhaps more entertained?
- Reflect: After your walk, take a moment to reflect on the experience. Did the time pass faster? Did you enjoy your walk more?
Get those steps in, and let’s see how mixing a little distraction can add a whole new layer of fun to this challenge.
Enjoy the walk, and keep stepping with a smile!
