Sleep Challenge Day 3 – Sharpen the Axe

🎯 Today’s Mission:

To successfully complete today’s mission:

  • Figure out, based on when you usually wake up, what time you need to be asleep by in order to get a solid 8 hours of sleep.
  • ✅ Set a bedtime alarm to go off 30 minutes before you need to be asleep. When that alarm goes off, you stop what you’re doing and turn off your light so that you have 30 mins to fall asleep.

Despite all of the benefits of sleep and risks of not getting enough, you may be sitting there thinking to yourself that there is just absolutely no way you can do it….

You are just too busy, there is too much that you need to do, you couldn’t possibly go to sleep with so many tasks left undone.

Well, it turns out that people who are sleep deprived are:

  • Less productive
  • Less efficient
  • More likely to make mistakes (which costs them even more time and energy).

You may find that it’s a “chicken or the egg” situation.

You feel like there is not enough time in the day to get enough sleep…but if you got enough sleep there would be enough time in the day to get enough sleep.

Which comes first?

🪓 Sharpen the Axe:

Well, staying up late and getting less sleep is a “race to the bottom” where you’re always going to end up worse and worse off.

Making sure that you get enough sleep, even if it means not doing everything you wanted to get done is a “race to the top” where you’re ultimately going to end up better off in the long run.

There’s a quote by Abraham Lincoln that says: “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”

Many of the richest and most successful people in the world are also the biggest advocates of making time to look after their health. They know that the time invested pays back big time in productivity and better overall performance.

When they are well-rested and healthy, they can get more done in a shorter amount of time and do a better job at it too.

Plus, when you wake up feeling refreshed, energised, and well-rested, then you’re able to enjoy life so much more – even the times when you have to work hard.

🤔 How much sleep is enough?

Everyone tends to function better on a different amount of sleep.

Most people need more sleep while some people actually function better on less.

However, getting a solid 7-8 hours is the most commonly beneficial amount for the average person and is a great goal to aim for.

If in doubt, start with more sleep than you think you need and see how you feel.

When you don’t get enough sleep, you accrue “sleep debt” which is exactly what it sounds like. When you don’t get enough sleep, your sleep bank balance falls short and it needs to be repaid. So if you have one or two late nights per week then it’s helpful to try to make up that sleep where you can.

Keeping in mind that if you’re very physically active or going through a stressful period in your life, you’re likely going to need more sleep than normal too.

Someone who lives a frantically busy workday and trains hard in the gym every night is going to need a lot more sleep than someone who is very sedentary with a relaxed and laid-back job.
