💡 More Info:
Spending time in nature has incredible health benefits for both managing stress and improving sleep.
In fact, a study of 20,000 people found that those who spend 2 hours a week in nature is associated with good health and psychological well-being.
As humans, we’re deeply connected to nature, whether we realise it or not.
This can be a challenge because the modern world tends to disconnect us from nature. We surround ourselves with technology, industrialisation, and convenience – all of which can actually increase how stressed we feel.
When we do spend time in nature, it just feels right. We’re innately drawn to it. Our heart rate, levels of stress hormones, and feelings of anxiety go down, while our immune system, mood, and self-esteem improve. We relax and feel a distinct sense of wellbeing.
All of this contributes to better quality and quantity of sleep.
🌴 Forest Bathing:
There’s a term in Japanese called “shinrin-yoku” or “forest bathing“.
It’s the practice of spending time being in nature. Taking in the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches of nature.
Despite the name forest bathing, being in or around nature can involve several possible things:
- Plants
- Animals
- Water
- Fresh air
- Sunlight
- Sounds of nature
- Smells of nature
- Physical sensations of nature
At best, being in nature might be going camping in the forest or walking along the beach.
At worst, it might just be buying a plant or some flowers for your desk.
Or it might be something in between, like taking your dog for a walk, drinking your coffee in the garden, or listening to the birds singing outside.
Whatever it is, make a conscious effort to spend more time disconnecting from technology and re-connecting with nature each day.
It’s one of the easiest and cheapest ways to feel better and sleep better.
