❓ How to complete the mission

Where do you stand (or should we say lie?) when it comes to making your bed? Do you haphazardly fluff some pillows or carefully smooth down the duvet? Was it a chore which was instilled in you as a child or a habit you picked up as you were older?

Did you know that this seemingly insignificant daily task can have some pretty awesome mental health benefits? According to VeryWellMind, making your bed sets you up for success for the rest of the day as you have already accomplished a task before even setting out the door.

Making the bed is about setting an intention to do the little things that bring about an orderly, thoughtful, responsible, balanced, or successful life. In addition to providing a quick sense of daily accomplishment, some people find making the bed calming as well.

Research shows there is a clear link between living and working in an organised, clutter-free environment and having improved focus, goal-setting skills, productivity, and lower levels of stress.

A tidy environment makes for a tidy mental space.

Another benefit is that it may improve sleep quality. The reasoning behind this is that just like making your bed signals the start of the day, climbing into a made bed provides a more pleasant experience and signals the end of the day.

🤓 How?

Try to incorporate it into your daily routine. And if you cannot make the bed (perhaps you are up earlier than someone who shares it with you 🙂 then do some tidying up instead).

Studies show that having reliable routines are key to many aspects of life, including physical and mental health. Building a habit like bed-making into your day can help to establish a healthy schedule, the benefits of which may spill over into many aspects of life, such as executive function, emotional regulation, productivity, and sleep.

This can be done in a number of different ways, some being:

  • Habit stacking. Link making your bed with a habit you already do. For instance you can get dressed then make your bed afterwards.
  • Don’t wait. Aim to make your bed straight away and get it done and ticked off immediately. You will not risk forgetting or skipping it.
  • Remind yourself. Post a note or set a reminder on your phone.

Remember that this process can be as simple as you want it to be! Even pulling up the duvet or fluffing a few pillows count.
