Behind any incredible achievement, you’ll find an incredible amount of effort.
Albert Einstein had it right when he said, “Genius is 1% talent and 99% hard work.”

The most successful people – whether in health, fitness, family, business, finances, art, etc – are the best because they outwork everyone else. Guaranteed.
So hear us when we say that it doesn’t matter whether you won the genetic lotto or couldn’t have given yourself a worse set of genes if you tried…
The majority of your success is going to come from you DOING things that you have COMPLETE control over and which require ZERO talent, luck, or genetics! Just effort.
How cool is that?!
Examples of ways that hard work beats talent:
- Keeping your house well stocked with more healthy food and less unhealthy food.
- Choosing to get up often and more around or exercise.
- The thoughts that you allow yourself to focus on.
- Setting a bedtime and sticking to it whenever possible.
- Choosing to spend more time with people who make you better and are more like who you’re trying to become.
- The goals that you set for yourself.
- The actions that you take consistently to achieve those goals.
- Showing up every single day, over and over again.
- Time management (think of as priority management).
- Creating time to think about your priorities, values, morals, and standards.
- Being coachable and open to other perspectives.
- What you schedule, diarise, and remind yourself of (those are your real priorities).
- Going the extra distance rather than only doing just enough to get by.
- Taking the time to minimise or remove distractions.
- Choosing to do important things first.
- Doing unimportant things only once important things are done.
- Setting aside time to plan ahead and prepare (The 7 Ps: Proper Planning and Preparation Prevent Piss-Poor Performance).
- Being respectful, grateful, and appreciative.
- Being curious, asking questions, and seeking to understand.
- The environment that you design around yourself.
Almost any achievement is the result of countless habits and behaviours, repeated over and over again, rather than some mystical ability that you may or may not have.
While your genetics can play a small role in your success, it matters much less than you might think.
Very few people ever come close to realizing their full genetic potential. Worst case you may have a limitation from becoming n world-class elite athlete that is pushing on the upper limits of human performance.
However, your inherited genetics combined with hard work and the right mindset will get you much further in life than someone who relies on their talent or good genetics alone.
Why? Because “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard,” according to Tim Notke.
