Day 4 [Mindset] SG NY Kickstart Challenge – Destination Message



Today we are going to talk about designing your fantastic new future. Your vision for your life over the next year.

What an exciting prospect that is!

With every journey you undertake you need a strong sense of where you want to get to. A clear picture to guide you on that path.

So we are going to take a trip down ‘future’ lane and write your Destination Message.

I grew up watching the 1985 classic Back to the Future with Micheal J Fox. If you have not seen it yet you must!

Just like his character in the movie Marty McFly we are going to visit ourselves from the future using our destination message to communicate what our future looks like and make it brighter.

Pretty neat right!

The message shows and tells you exactly what you want to happen with your journey over the next year.

It’s just like “Future You” travels back in time to tell you what it’s like in detail.

The Destination Message tells you what you want.

So in order to get that vision into a concrete and useful outcome for you we will start with the question.

What do you want out of life?

Most people when they answer this question in our coaching program tend to focus on what they do not want rather than what they DO want.

For example:

I don’t want to be fat.

I don’t want to feel unfit.

I don’t want to take all these medications.

I don’t want to feel unattractive and unsexy.

I don’t want to feel out of control of my eating.

Would it not be easier to imagine what you DO want?

What DO you want from this next year? Can you picture it?

So how about we reframe things and flip the script.

How about this rather?

I want to be lean and healthy with some muscle.

I want to be in better shape — strong, fast, flexible, agile, physically capable.

I want to take fewer medications, or get off my medications entirely.

I want to feel HOT and confident.

I want to eat normally, intuitively, and sanely. I want to nourish my body with wise and balanced food choices.

Clearly defining our goals in terms of moving towards what we want rather than only away from what is causing us pain is much more inspiring and exciting.

It also starts to give us a bit more direction for taking action.

Think of it kind of like a brainstorming process that helps us better visualise our potential and gives us the beginnings of our blueprint to success.

SO now that we are all excited let’s get started on the message!

Your action

Forget all of your fears and doubts for a moment.

Close your eyes and imagine yourself in 12 months time… What might that future look like? Where do you want to be? What do you want to be doing? How do you want to feel?

Visualise yourself returning from the future with your message.

What would that message look like IN DETAIL?

In a year from today, in an ideal world…

Where do you want to be?

What do you want to be doing?

What do you want to feel?

What adventures do you want to be having?

There is no “right way” to do this. You aren’t being graded or judged on what you write here. This is purely for your own benefit.

Don’t worry about how “realistic” this is right now. Use your imagination. Go wild!

Whether it’s abseiling off a mountain, running a marathon, winning a competition, doing an obstacle race, completing 50 parkruns or just fitting in to your old jeans… imagine who and where you could be one year from now.

Then capture that in a way that inspires you and that you can easily refer back to.

Write it down. Why not, write a letter from your future self and ACTUALLY get it delivered at the end of the year. Or just type it up and send yourself an email using a Gmail tool like Boomerang. Old school – write it on on a piece of paper and put it in a draw or your safe.

Clip photos. Make a Pinterest board. Put up a calendar. Oldschool stick photos on cardboard. Make a vision board. Draw a picture. Call up a friend and make a ridiculous bet. Surf the web to find inspiration.

Imagine it.

Capture it.

Have fun with it.


And make it just a little more real today.

Then everyday this year.

Do something that your future self will thank you for!
