We Chose LIFE
At the age of 32 my husband Mario Cotton was diagnosed with high blood pressure, morbidly obese and a smoker.
As a 30 year old mother to three children ages 4 ,7 and 9, who kept blaming my genetics for my obesity. I joined Sleekgeek in 2014 and slowly started making small changes but still kept making excuses, ”healthy eating is expensive“ being one of the major ones. It became evident we needed to make a change if we wanted to see our children grow up and even be able to see our grandchildren one day. My daily complaining about my weight and seeing how my daughters saw me, made me decide a positive change had to happen.
So at the end of January 2015 we quit smoking and changed our way of eating, we also started running a few times a week. Yet at the end of March we decided a more committed change was needed. As a family of 5 on a very tight budget we joined a small gym and with 3 small children with no outside support, we compromised: I go to gym in the mornings and Mario goes after work at night. On Saturdays we all go to the gym because we feel it is important that our children feel they are part of this healthy lifestyle. We also go for family walks on the weekend or go play in the park.
We made an eating plan suited to our budget, and trust me when I say, healthy eating does not have to be expensive, fresh fruit and vegetables and good quality protein does not have to cost and arm and a leg, and it is definitely much cheaper than take out and junk food! It just takes a little more time for preparation.
I have lost 14kg in total and my body fat % is down to 20%, Mario has lost a total of 23kg since the end of March and his body fat % is down to 19%. He is also off of his blood pressure medication.
The hope of living a healthy life has become a reality, being active and seeing our children grow up making healthy choices makes this journey even more fulfilling.
Our journey is far from over but each day we strive to reach our goals. Together as a family, we will no longer make excuses and the word CAN’T is no longer allowed to be used in our household , this word holds you back from being the best person you can be.
As a mother I have seen how a negative self worth can affect ones children.
By making one healthy choice instead of a bad one, you can change your mindset and let only positive changes happen.
Don’t ever give up, each day is a chance for new possibilities, and it is up to you to choose LIFE! We did, and that is the best choice we ever made as parents and for ourselves.
