I would like to encourage every one of you to lead and inspire others. – I am going to tell you how you can do that and why it can benefit your own life and health goals. You can also apply these principles to all areas of your life.
“You don’t need a title to be a leader.”
Each and every person reading this – whether you think you can or not – has the ability to lead and inspire others.
When I left my corporate job to take on Sleekgeek full-time I set the vision for this community to change 100,000 lives by inspiring people to embrace a healthy lifestyle.
I was just a single guy with a dream. At that stage there were only about 1,000 Sleekgeeks. Now across all our platforms we have close to 15,000.
My logic was simple. I had seen that movie “Pay it forward” and the whole idea was that if could inspire 10 people, then 100, then a 1,000 then why the hell not 100,000 and more!?
This is the ripple effect of community and leadership and I am inviting you to play a key role in inspiring some of that 100,000 with your actions.
The BONUS is that I am going to tell you how doing so can bring you the things you want in your life.
Inspire others through actions
I will use my story and personal journey for some ideas.
I was simply an overweight guy who lost weight and gave up smoking. Nothing dramatically amazing about that? People around us do that every day with little fuss.
I see daily before and after photos of people whose transformations are WAY more impressive then mine. I was not obese. Nobody will look at my photos and have their jaws drop like some of the mind-boggling transformations that we see in the community.
So I could have been just another guy who lost weight and changed my life. It could have ended there.
BUT….. I decided it was my duty to share this message. I simply could not keep this to myself. It would be selfish.
For the first time in my life I felt amazing. I started to live a life that I did not even know existed. I felt alive and vital. To discover that at 35 was bliss and bitter sweet at the same time. I regretted all the years I had wasted feeling tired, slow and not living an optimal life.
Looking around at society, my friends, my colleagues, my family I simply knew that there are too many people existing in the shadow of ill health and living mediocre lives. I knew that helping another person to discover the same things is the greatest gift I could ever give.
Changing one person’s life path forever and for the better is invaluable.
I decided my role in life was to INSPIRE others to change. Not through words but through example and action. Which is why I got my tattoo to remind me of my daily purpose.
I am going to tell you how you inspire and lead others. Everyone can.
Walk the talk
It is absurd that a man should rule others, who cannot rule himself. —Latin Proverb
The first powerful step you need to take is to work on yourself and take control of your actions.
I think it is very important at this point to emphasise that you do not need to have achieved amazing results to have the right to lead others.
You do not need to have a six pack. You can even be at the start of your journey….. but at the very least you need to be putting into practice what you expect of others and be an example.
We never preach to people. We are not religious zealots. We do not believe we are better then anyone else. We lead by example.
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” —John Quincy Adams
As you can imagine having 15,000 people watch your every move is a little bit of pressure to be doing the right things!
If I do not live the lifestyle I am encouraging nobody will take me seriously and why would they then bother to care if I do not?
So yes…you HAVE to be brave and be prepared to make yourself accountable to others.
Whether it is your family, your friends, strangers, 1000’s of people… a country if you are the president you must have enough courage to put yourself out there.
It is easy to do if you want it.
What I mean by that is that I am ok with so many people scrutinising me and in many cases judging too. But I am comfortable with it because I deep down genuinely WANT to be all the things that I promote. Fit, healthy and strong. Some days I think life would be easier if I did not want those things but those are fleeting thoughts and I always come back to what I truly want despite the challenges and effort.
In a way accountability is my secret weapon. A tool I use to keep me focussed.
Sometimes I wonder if on some subconscious level, I created the Sleekgeek community as a way to ensure that I never lose my way again. To make it impossible for me to fail.
So you have to be prepared to put it out there. To shout your goals from the rooftops. To tell other people your intentions.
Many people prefer to not tell people their goals so that they can fail in silence and not be judged. That is a losing mentality from day 1. That implies you do not truly believe you can see it through.
Leading others is a great responsibility and demands that you are ready to be accountable to others and live up to your true potential.
“Leaders think and talk about the solutions. Followers think and talk about the problems.” —Brian Tracy
You do not have to have all the answers. Nobody ever does and those that think they do are fooling themselves.
But you do need to have a positive mindset.
This applies to all aspects of your life. Always have a CAN DO approach to life. Believe that anything is possible. Believe in yourself and others.
The people you lead will be inspired by your winning attitude. It is infectious.
It is OK to fail
There is nothing wrong with making mistakes as a leader. We are human in the end.
It is ok to not always be right.
If you lose your way a little that does not take away your right to be a leader and lead others. It is what you do with that which makes all the difference.
Yes. Preaching one thing and practising another is being a hypocrite if that that is the regular pattern. However the odd failing is fine if mostly you are doing what you expect of others.
Sometimes it can be a strength to show others that you are also just human and have battles, weaknesses and demons like everyone else.
Show leadership in the actions of dealing with those.
Nurture and grow
There are many different leadership styles.
Dictators are sometimes very successful leaders. I have encountered some corporate sociopaths who get great results by ruling with fear. I do not believe that is sustainable leadership.
My preferred style and what I would encourage you to do is to lift people up. Help them to believe that they CAN achieve the things they never thought possible step by step.
A leader’s job is to serve as much as guide. Help people to believe in themselves.
Provide them the tools but create an environment that they may learn and become self sufficient.
“Teach a man to fish” is the key.
The best thing you can give to someone is the skills to help themselves and in turn others. That way they are fine when you are not around and they can pay it forward to others.
Who are you going to lead? Action tips.
So now that you are ready to explore leading others what can you do tomorrow, next week and after that?
Here are some quick suggestions to get the ideas flowing:
- Start by making the right choices consistently yourself.
- Get some results to show. Constantly be learning and growing.
- Make your goals and ambitions public.
- Be an example to your family and encourage the household to support you by shifting habits too.
- Show you children a healthy way through your actions. Reward them for healthy choices rather then rewarding them with junk food.
- Invite a friend or a colleague to join in you in a fitness activity. A 5km park run on the weekend. A hike. A walk on the promenade. A run.
- Invite someone to be your “buddy” to achieve a goal jointly. An eating challenge, a fitness challenge. Any type of dual accountability.
- Introduce someone new to the Sleekgeek community as a powerful support structure [They can START here]
- Organise health related events as often as possible so you are seen as an initiator.
- When people approach you for help, serve and inspire them.
There are a million ways to show your leadership and set an example. When at an office function and everyone is over indulging on cake and you decide to make a healthy choice you are showing leadership.
Grand gestures and not necessary to make a difference.
Help me and the SG community to change 100,000 lives. You have an important role to play and absolutely can make a difference to the world. I encourage you to believe in yourself and be a leader.
