Kobus does his Half Iron and loses 50kgs with the Sleekgeek REBOOT

Last year a man, Kobus Vorster, attended a JHB Sleekgeek Dinner in Melrose Arch (pictured left below). He was very friendly and came and told me he is going to change his life and he was so happy he had discovered our incredible community. He then bought some tshirts that did not quite fit yet and told me he was going to do a half marathon and was about to start training. Kobus then became an active member of the community and recently has completed the Half Iron man which is an incredible achievement. Additionally since that day I met him last year he has now lost 50kgs with the Sleekgeek REBOOT lifestyle. With those 2 milestones under the belt I asked him to share his story with us at a recent lunch we had in CT (pictured right). So I will hand it over to Kobus to do just that!

My story

I have been an over-weight person most of my life with some thinner periods in between.

At school from about standard 7 onwards I was very conscious of what I ate and was leaner which eventually helped for my time in the army as well.

When I finished the army I started working and with the money coming in, the eat outing and partying with friends took over my lifestyle.

YOU-CAN_LOGOI picked up weight until eventually I weighed a massive 152kg.

One of my friends took me too a Weigh Less class at the time and in six months I lost 52 kg.

It was during this time that I met my lovely wife after a gallbladder operation, (Luckily skinny and looking good). I then took up cycling as a sport and enjoyed every minute of it.

We got married in 1997 and from there life happened.

Through Weigh Less I learned how to lose weight but not how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. That was a problem. As soon as you are not focused results are lost. It was not a sustainable system for me.

And with the years, the weight increased and in 2005 I made peace with the fact that I am fat and will always be a fat person.

I ate what ever I felt like and never gave healthy eating a second thought. I set a very bad example for my family and as a result they were also over weight.

I still looked at diets, trying to get the “perfect” golden diet, that is easy to do and you lose lots and lots of weight. But I never found it because most of these entailed starving yourself and I did not want to do that.

I still cycled alot, but being about 70kg over-weight made it very difficult. But at certain stages, I was a “fit fatman”.

I now can confirm, that you can be as fit as you want, and train hard, but if you do not check what you take in into your body, you will not lose weight.

It really is 80% eating and 20% exercise.

Then in Feb or March 2013 one of my Facebook friends joined the SleekGeek Group and I saw the 8 Week Challenge starting. Not knowing what it was about at that stage I did not participate but I  joined the Sleekgeek Facebook Group which is 100% free and then got all the wonderful and inspirational posts daily from group members which inspired me a great deal to pursue health.

I then read about Sleekgeek 30 day REBOOT Detox, also free, and considered it for Feb/March and finally in April I decided to take on the REBOOT. I started the 6th May 2013. And the rest is history.

It turned out to be the best decision of my life. I learned through reboot that there are certain foods, I can do without. And from there, started to realize that it is all about healthy eating and choosing what to put into my body. I discovered you can eat well, not starve yourself, take in the right nutrients and lose weight at the same time.

I now try to teach my children that it is not about a diet but about making the right choices. Simply choosing if something is good or bad for you. As a family we have all changed our habits with life changing results.

Ironman quest

One of my main goals in life is to do a full Ironman race and I am constantly working towards that.

In April I entered for a 5150 Tri Athlon in Bela Bela. My timing was also right, because without Reboot style eating and being healthy and losing weight, I would not have been able to complete the 5150 that was held end Aug 2013.

After the Bela Bela 5150, I entered for the Germiston 5150 on the 3rd Nov 2013.

Now on the 26th Jan 2014 it was one of my proudest moments yet and greatest achivements when I became a Half Ironman.

50 down, 20 to go

To date I have lost 50 kg’s. Still have 20 to go, but with my lifestyle change, through SleekGeek, I will stay healthy and reach my goal and will be doing the full Ironman in April 2015.

The positive impact the eating healthy has had on me and my family, is that we have come to learn that you need to educate yourself on what is in the food you consume, and we try to stay away from all processed foods and read labels.

If there are any one out there, thinking that they can not do it, take a look at all the success stories within the SleekGeek community and you will be able to identify with some of the people.

Then use that as part of your motivation. If I can do it any body can. And remember to stay active within the community. It is a great way to learn and inspire others.
