Roxy Schmidlin did it! 21kgs! [You can live life well!]

I have to admit, when Elan asked me to write this story, I was terrified.  I thought, there are so many other people out there with more inspirational stories than mine so why share mine? See I’ve always been very shy but he got me thinking…if I can inspire one, just ONE person to reach their personal health and fitness goals than this is going to be worth it so here goes…

Where I started

Since growing up as a kid I can remember always being the chubby one in the group.  I have always been very curvy (get this from my mom and gran) and due to my height (shortie) extra kilos really show on me very quickly.  Unfortunately I have always had a very bad sweet-tooth which has always been a downfall of mine.

I was always looking at other girls, comparing myself to them and literally HATING myself and my body.  It was so bad that I refused to look in a mirror while getting dressed and seeing what I looked like to myself in the mirror.  There was so many times when I cried and asked: why could I not have been born thinner so that I could be happy?? In typical girl fashion, I would browse through magazines and wished that I looked like all the thin models in there.  So I reached a point where I could not take it anymore.

Enter years of yo-yo dieting

Yup, if there was a 1-week diet, detox, diet pill or meal replacement shake – I tried them all, and managed to lose bits of weight here and there but would inevitably gain it all back plus more.  I was literally depriving myself of essential nutrients and I was constantly starving!  I literally got sick one day from the smell of the meal replacement shake I was drinking.

After school I left to go work in London, which was also tough on weight-loss as it’s so cold over there so all u wanna do all day is eat!  A low-point for me there was when my boyfriend at the time told me I look the way I do because I eat the way I do and I am fat.  I was in this unhappy relationship for 3 years and he never had anything good to say about me which does not do the self-confidence any good.

And from there everything just spiralled out of control.  I got into the wrong crowd and started partying a lot, drinking, staying out all night  etc… it was the only time when I felt good and not thinking about how unhappy and depressed I was, so this went on for quite some time. I became very withdrawn, moody and lethargic.  I was always tired; I never wanted to go out ever and was avoiding mirrors like it was the plague.  My evenings were spent on the couch for 3/4 hours watching movies/series and basically just eating crap.  The thing was, nobody ever told me that I needed to lose weight, so I was living in this kind of denial world.  Until…

The breaking point

I will never forget when my dad sat me down one evening and asked me if he could be honest and very straight up about something with me.  I said off course.  So he says, I love you so much, and because I do I am going to tell you that your bum is getting huge and you need to make a plan. I have witnessed for months your unhappiness and I decided enough is enough.

I was shocked! I will admit I was very hurt and upset with him for a while especially with the way he said it.  But do you know what? There is no easy way to try and get somebody out of a rut, so in my case I think the shock factor worked.

One week after that night, I decided to join Weigh-Less.  I realised that there was no yo-yo diet or pill that was going to get me control back of my life and that I needed to take it into my own hands.  One of my dad’s employees had lost over 40kg’s on Weigh-less so I thought let’s give this a try.  It was the best decision I ever made.

I lost about 15kg’s on the Weigh-less eating plan.  After the first 6 months I started going to gym and doing spinning classes.  Then I started talking to people about training and nutrition and started getting really interested in how it all works and was at this point reading a lot of articles on the subject.  So I adapted a different way of eating (5-6 clean meals a day) and started doing weights.

I lost another 6kg’s which will make it today a total of 21kg’s.  I went down from an almost size 16 to a size 10 and I was ecstatic.  I could not afford personal training, so I downloaded a 12-week weight-lifting program off a website and I have never looked back.

Don’t get me wrong – there were many days where I was so sore and tired and not seeing any changes in my body really and just wanted to give up.  I used to go weigh in every week even if I knew I had had a bad week eating wise and there were many weeks when I even gained a kilo here or there, but I kept on going back to stay accountable.

I just kept going and told myself: “You can do this!!!”  And all of a sudden, I started to see changes.

Me today

I am happy and healthy and a bit of a fitness junkie these days to be honest! I have self-confidence for the first time in my life and can walk with my head held high and be proud of what I’ve achieved.  Losing weight is not just about how you look on the outside, but really it changes you on the inside and that confidence shines out to others.

My current lifestyle

I am training weights and HIIT (High intensity interval training) cardio 5 days a week.  Most recently I have started getting into Crossfit type workouts too which I love!  I eat 5-6 healthy meals and drink 3 litres of water every day.

I still have a long way to go, as you all probably know it’s always a work-in-progress kind of thing, and some days are much harder than others, but what I’ve learned throughout this journey is that consistency is much better than perfection and when I cheat/have a bad day, I just brush it off and start again.  No biggie.

My advice to everyone starting a weight/fat-loss journey

Don’t be scared or embarrassed to ask people for help because “Every pro was once an amateur and every expert was once a beginner.”

So dream BIG and start NOW 🙂

The only way to succeed is to do this for YOURSELF and not for anybody else, make the decision to change your life and stick with it.

Do NOT believe what you read in the magazines or whatever other source about having to do hours of cardio – it is simply not true, stick to a good weight-lifting program and short intense cardio workouts and you will be golden.

Eat whole, nutritious food and lots of veggies and salad.  Drink a lot of water to stay hydrated. Plan and prepare your meals in advance for the week ahead, that way you won’t have any reason not to eat clean and healthy.

Throw away the SCALE and stick to measurements, body fat %, progress photos or how you feel in your clothes to see how you are progressing.

This is so true to me and in difficult times I always remember:

“The moment you are ready to quit is usually the moment right before a miracle happens.  Don’t give up.”
