“The good, the bad and the truth about my 30-day Reboot Challenge
A lot of things have happened since 21 October 2011; that was the day I quit smoking. I started a 5km training programme and I got more serious about going to bootcamp classes. The more I exercised, though, the less progress I saw! I felt like I was doing the exercises better, but I couldn’t see any changes to my body.
Here is the thing. My eating habits were non-existent. I would eat crisps every single day, drink copious amounts of coffee and tea and if I didn’t have a pop-it-in-the-microwave-for-tw
Fast forward to July 2012 and I am feeling lethargic, heavy, tired and lazy! It was during this time that I started seeing Elan’s posts on the group page. He was talking about this challenge he was on and it sounded crazy to me! So I did what I had to do…. I googled!
The time for doing this just didn’t seem right though; as I was retrenched from my job and I was about to put my place in the market to move out of PE. Taking up a detox challenge for a whole month would just add to my stress levels!
I was intrigued though. I started to think that maybe I needed this challenge to reset my eating habits or just to adopt good ones. I still had my doubts, but every time I had a cup of coffee with 2 spoonfuls of sugar; every time I had the take-away with the chips, every-time I skipped a meal; every time I picked up Chuckles, Pringles and speckled eggs as I go to the pay-out counter or every time I popped that easy-meal into the microwave; I found myself thinking “What is this doing to my body?”
The thing that made me doubt this challenge was that I thought I wasn’t up to it. I didn’t think I could do this. A few people even said I was crazy! And this doubt in me was what actually pushed me to do it in the end. I had to prove to myself that I could be good to myself.
I started the detox on 1 August 2012. A few days after that Elan announced that a 30-day Reboot Challenge was going to start, with its own group page and I joined the group.
My first day was TERRIBLE! I don’t eat eggs, but thought it was all in my mind, so I made some scrambled eggs for breakfast and felt sick till about 11:00am!!! I had such bad headaches and couldn’t get off the couch. My body felt numb and I just wanted to sleep. Day 2 … even worse. The headaches were still there and I still had no energy. I decided to go to my bootcamp class and felt much better after that. Day 3 was kind of better… by day 5 I had so much energy and loved the fact that I was actually buying food and eating it.
I thought that I would count off the days to get back to having my “normal” foods; instead I was counting off the days to prove to myself that I am able to see a challenge through! I now realise that this challenge was actually a journey. It was not something that I did to deprive or punish myself with; it was something that I gained so much from. Good eating habits, so much energy, the understanding that food really is the fuel that your body needs to function. Yes, I missed a cappuccino and am going to have one today, but I love the green and jasmine tea I have in the morning and all the other new habits that I have learnt.
This challenge was exactly what I needed in my life right now. I feel empowered, I feel positive and energetic. All the things that I was worried about; looking for a job, trying to sell my flat; was made easier by the positive effects of this challenge. It has me feeling so good that I have signed up for the Summer Challenge!
Thank you Elan for sharing your story as it got me to be kinder to my own body. This challenge was just the first step on my journey to a healthy lifestyle.
Have a wonderful weekend before the start of the challenge on Monday!!!”
